Representing the majority of recreational boats, engines, trailers, and marine accessories built in the United States and Canada, NMMA unites manufac- turers, policymakers, and consumers around a shared commitment to safety, stewardship, and innovation. Recreational boating is a uniquely American-made industry, with 95% of boats sold in the United States built by domestic manufacturers. The American boat building industry continues to set the standard for quality, safety, and innovation in marine design and construction ensur- ing recreational boating remains not only accessible, but also safer and more sustainable for generations to come. Unifying the Voice of North America’s Boating Industry NMMA is the leading trade association representing North America’s recreational boating industry. Formed through the 1979 merger of the Boating Industry Association and the National Association of Engine and Boat Manufacturers, NMMA was established to unify the voice of marine manufacturers and advocate on behalf of recreational boating. Its mission centers on promoting safe and sustainable boating, supporting manufacturers, and advancing policy that protects access to waterways and fosters innovation. While the NMMA name dates to the late 1970s, its roots stretch back to the early 20th century when smaller trade groups represented different segments of the boating industry—from engine makers to hull and component manufacturers. As recreational boating became a major outdoor recreation activity, NMMA expanded its scope to include boat shows. It further engaged consumers through Discover Boating, safety certification programs, and technical standards aligned with the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) and the International Organization for Standardization. Today, NMMA represents more than 85% of the boats, engines, trailers, and marine accessory manufacturers in the United States and Canada. The association works closely with federal agencies, including the Coast Guard, on a wide range of regulatory, environmental, and safety issues—from emissions compliance and safe fueling to education and workplace safety. In recent years, NMMA has also played a leadership role in international efforts to further decarbonize the recreational marine sector, through lifecycle assessment work and collaboration Image courtesy of NMMA
